WASHINGTON — The suspect responsible for the shooting of two members of the West Virginia National Guard in Washington D.C., has been identified as Afghan National Rahmanullah Lakanwal. The tragic event resulted in the death of Sarah Beckstrom, while Andrew Wolfe is still in critical condition.
Lakanwal, reportedly having worked with a Central Intelligence Agency–backed military unit during the U.S. war in Afghanistan, was granted asylum after receiving temporary immigration status under humanitarian parole, according to Afghan-Evac. At this time, authorities have stated that the motive for the shooting remains unknown as investigators work to identify any ideological, political, or personal motives.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that the suspect will be charged with first-degree murder, and Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that they would seek terrorism charges and the possibility of the death penalty.
Trump has set out to pause any migration from Afghanistan and other third-would countries, along with reviewing all asylum cases and green card holders approved under the last administration.
