Potential Peace in Gaza

The plan announced by Trump, along with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, has received support from several Arab nations and European powers. While Hamas has agreed to the initial steps of the proposal, it has raised concerns and made demands regarding the future governance of the Gaza Strip.

The first phase of the plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, followed by a partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Within 72 hours, hostages from both sides shall be exchanged, along with full uninterrupted humanitarian aid sent to the region.

To advance toward lasting peace, the next stages of the plan must be finalized, particularly those concerning the future governance of Gaza. Under the proposal, Gaza will have a temporary technocratic committee consisting of apolitical Palestinians. The committee will be overseen by a “board of peace” led by Trump and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. The plan eventually envisions a Palestinian Authority, hinting at the possibility of a future Palestinian state.

Support for the proposal from regional powers has increased pressure on Hamas. They have struck down key aspects of the plan, particularly over their involvement in the region’s future and the demands of disarmament. Netanyahu emphasizes the importance of Hamas being abolished, the demilitarizing of the region, and opposed existence of a Palestinian Statehood. These disagreements leave it unclear how the governing of Gaza will be executed and achieved. Continued diplomacy, regional cooperation, and international negotiation will be essential to turn this proposal into a durable peace.
