The Trump administration has made significant changes to the educational department, citing the government’s push to revamp education across the country. The department plans to redirect up to $500 million into HBCUs and Tribal Universities, $137 million to American history and civics grants, and another $60 million for charter schools. These allocations are added to the institutions’ existing federal grants, all while cutting the departments’ funding by 15% for next year.

The administration has already made big changes by reversing many of the previous legislation such as cutting DEI programs, and the reviewing of federal grants will continue that trend. The administration has made it clear that policies they view are, “not in the best interest of students and families will be cut or redirected.

This is only a one-time investment, but it will result in huge increases for HBCUs budgets, as they will increase by roughly 48%. The assistance is much needed for the universities, as they can expand and improve their infrastructure. However, redirecting the money helps the new institutions it invests in, but not the ones that lose it. Major cuts include the $350 million from grants that support Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI), $15 million from magnet schools, $9 million from gifted and talented programs, and $31 million from Ready to Learn.

The administration claims the cuts are part of efforts to eliminate funding tied to “government-mandated racial quotas.” Linda McMahon, a key administration figure, emphasized the importance of removing race-based criteria from federal funding, stating, “Discrimination based upon race or ethnicity has no place in the United States.”

Critics argue that these moves not only undercut equity in education, but also signal a broader plan to dismantle or decentralize the Department of Education. President Trump and his allies have long proposed abolishing the department, intending to shift its functions to state-level or alternative federal agencies.
